D&D Loot Generator

Pick a challenge rating. The coins are rolled on the DMG treasure dice, and magic items are drawn from the SRD at the right rarity. Then each pile gets a container, a history and one oddity the party won’t throw away.

Magic items

  • Cloak of Protection — Wondrous Items, uncommon (requires attunement). Captain Oswin Tarrant wore it on every boarding action, and it was the only reason he walked off three sinking ships before the fourth took him. Uncommon
  • Wand of Enemy Detection — Wand, rare (requires attunement). Tarrant's quartermaster, a former court mage named Perpetua Vell, stole it from a Lorant lord and sold it to the captain for a share of the prize money. Rare
  • Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location — Wondrous Items, uncommon (requires attunement). Tarrant bought it from a smuggler in Port Caddis to hide his cargo routes from the navy, and he wore it until the night he went over the rail. Uncommon

The oddity

  • Tarrant's Last Tally Stick — A notched hazel stick, half a foot long, with forty-one cuts and a dark brown stain at one end. The notches are arranged in groups of seven, and the last group has only three cuts.

Coins rolled on the DMG treasure-hoard dice. Gems, art and magic items follow the DMG’s pattern for this tier, drawn from the SRD 5.1 item list with real rarities.

5e treasure hoard tables, rolled for you

The Dungeon Master's Guide hands out treasure two ways: individual treasure for what a single creature carries, and treasure hoards for the big payoff at the end of a dungeon. Both scale with challenge rating. Here are the coin dice this generator rolls for hoards:

HoardCPSPGPPPAverage
CR 0–46d6 × 1003d6 × 1002d6 × 10—≈ 200 gp
CR 5–102d6 × 1002d6 × 1,0006d6 × 1003d6 × 10≈ 3,860 gp
CR 11–16——4d6 × 1,0005d6 × 100≈ 31,500 gp
CR 17+——12d6 × 1,0008d6 × 1,000≈ 322,000 gp

Each hoard also gets one lot of gems or art objects at the tier's values (10 gp gems at the low end, up to 7,500 gp art objects at the top) and a handful of magic items from the SRD at the rarity you'd expect for that tier. Then the writing pass gives the pile a container, a history for each item, and one odd object with a story.

Questions DMs ask

Why not just roll on the tables myself?
You can! This is quicker at 11pm, and it adds the part the tables don't: who owned this, and why there's a child's tin soldier in a dragon hoard.
Are the magic items official?
Yes. Items come from the 5e SRD with their real rarity and attunement. The generator never invents items.
